Cognitive Neuroscience Research Unit

Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona | Institut d’Investigacions Mèdiques Hospital del Mar

The Cognitive Neuroscience Research Unit (URNC) is a social cognitive neuroscience lab at the Department of Psychiatry of the Autonomous University of Barcelona and at the Hospital del Mar  Research Institute.

The URNC applies a multifaceted methodology, including neuroimaging, neuropsychological and metabolomic techniques, to study the neural and psychological dimensions of fundamental social phenomena, including the adaptations for motherhood, altruism and pro-sociality, and how these processes may be disrupted leading to mental health conditions.

Our projects

Humans are an intrinsically social species whose brains have been shaped by evolution to meet the challenges of living in complex communities. The goal of social neuroscience is to study the underpinnings of such neural adaptations with the help of a variety of techniques and methodologies common to cognitive psychology, neurobiology and neuroimaging. The URNC was founded with the aim of developing social-neuroscience research around the topics of motherhood, altruism and pro-sociality, as well as on how pregnancy can lead to certain mental health conditions.
